Dear Friends,
Summer has come to a close and Randy has returned to Minnesota for his third season with the Timberwolves. The RFF staff has been working diligently with the Assist 4 Life program and in developing other projects. We have a series of upcoming fundraisers and events, and are excited for another rewarding year.
SUMMER UPDATE
The RFF hosted its first annual “Night for Newark” gala in August at NJPAC. This immaculate venue was the perfect backdrop for friends and supporters to come together for the benefit of the children of Newark.
The event was a successful fundraiser and memorable evening featuring a comedic performance by Louie Anderson. Attendees were greeted by Newark Mayor Cory Booker and were treated to a video montage showing the RFF’s growth and outreach. Randy threw out basketballs to the RFF’s MVPs, and NYC-based Motown show band Soul Sound Revue brought down the house.
The highlight of the night was the live auction which brought the likes of Bill Raftery, Rollie Massimino, Jay Wright and Billy Crudup on stage with Randy to accept bids on one-of-a-kind packages ranging from exclusive golf trips, show tickets, and opportunities to work alongside Randy in his community or take a trip behind-the-scenes to learn more about his typical NBA day.
RANDY FOYE BASKETBALL CAMP
The Randy Foye Basketball Camp was held at Rumson Country Day School on the heels of the gala. Randy and crew quickly turned around to host over 100 campers from August 4-8, half of which were on scholarship from the RFF.
The 6 hour daily camp included skill instruction, lectures from Randy, competitions, 5 on 5 games, and a host of awards and autographs handed out at the closing assembly on Friday.
Guest speakers included Jay Wright, Villanova University; Freddie Hill, Rutgers University; motivational speaker Jack Howley, Howley Financial Group; and Sandy Pyonin, NJ Roadrunners Boys AAU Basketball.
The camp brought together kids from the local area with a busload from Newark. It stressed the value of teamwork and a positive attitude in order to achieve success. With Randy leading by example, the campers came together as a cohesive family by the end of the week, and all of the kids enjoyed plenty of opportunities to get to know Randy and learn the game of basketball from him personally.
ASSIST 4 LIFE
In addition to attending the Night for Newark and basketball camp, the Assist 4 Life students spent a lot of time with Randy this summer, learning from him and following his example. Randy brought the students to a Newark Bears game when he threw out the first pitch, and also hosted a barbecue for them at the end of summer.
FALL HAPPENINGS
With a new school year underway, the RFF staff and volunteers are providing mentorship to the students at Dr. E. Alma Flagg School in Newark through the Assist 4 Life program. Randy’s assists are being recorded for each game this season. At the end of the season, for each of his assists, the RFF will donate money to the school. This cooperative project will allow students to follow Randy’s progress while striving to reach their own potential as well.
The RFF will also be hosting a series of fundraising events throughout the year, in anticipation of next summer’s gala. These events are a great opportunity for people of all ages to get involved with the Foundation. Whether you are part of the Nova Nation, represent Newark or are an avid Timberwolves fan, stay tuned for information on events in your area.
If your group is interested in hosting a fundraiser for the RFF, please contact us about a planned donation through a fundraising event. In June, Villanova University’s Manhattan Alumni Chapter hosted a fundraiser at Town Tavern. The event, which raised over $1,200 for the Foundation, brought together alumni of all ages for a fun night with Randy and a great cause.
